Professor Wei Zhao is the eighth Rector of the University of Macau (UM). At the same time as taking up the new rectorship, he is also appointed the first Chair Professor of the University of Macau . Before joining the University of Macau , Professor Zhao served as the Dean of the School of Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Director for the Division of Computer and Network Systems in the U.S. National Science Foundation, and Senior Associate Vice President for Research at Texas A&M University . Professor Zhao completed his undergraduate programme in physics at Shanxi Normal University , Xi'an , China , in 1977, and he later received his MSc and PhD degrees in Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst , in 1983 and 1986 respectively. During his academic career, he has also worked as a faculty member at Shanxi Normal University , Amherst College , University of Adelaide , Texas A&M University , and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
As an IEEE Fellow, Professor Zhao has made significant contributions in distributed computing, real-time systems, computer networks, and cyberspace security. His research group has been well recognized and received numerous awards and prizes including the outstanding paper award from the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems, the best paper award from the IEEE National Aerospace and Electronics Conference, and an award on technology transfer from the Defense Advanced Research Program Agency. In 2010, Professor Zhao was appointed as the chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program (973) on Cyber-physical and Networking Systems by the by Ministry of Science and Technology of China. In 2007, he received the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems Outstanding Achievement Award. Professor Zhao is the holder of two US patents and has published over 300 papers in journals, conferences, and book chapters.
Professor Zhao is also an outstanding leader in professional services. He has served on editorial boards of technical journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Computers and the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems. He is the chair for the IEEE Technical Committee of Real-Time Systems. He has chaired more than ten international conferences including the IEEE Real-Time Technology and Applications Symposia, the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposia, and the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems.
Professor Zhao has had extensive administration experience in higher education and research management. While serving as the head of the Department of Computer Science between 1997 and 2001, the funding for sponsored research quadrupled and the undergraduate programme was ranked the 17th in a national survey. He was also responsible for setting up the "Texas A&M Centre for Information Assurance and Security" and was appointed the founding director. The Centre was acclaimed by the U.S. National Security Agency as the Centre for Academic Excellence. During his assignment at the National Science Foundation, funding of his division increased 20%, the dwell time performance improved 24%, and the number of submitted proposals increased by 14%. Having been serving as the Rector of the University of Macau for merely a few months, Professor Zhao has successfully led the University to establish the first Honours College in Macao with its prime focus on educating academically talented and committed students and fostering them into outstanding elites and promising leaders of society. Professor Zhao further implements educational reform which includes creating the undergraduate research programme with emphasis on research innovation. He also launches a series of faculty development initiatives to elevate our faculty and build the University brand so as to enhance the University's position as a first-class university.

Dr. Cao is currently a professor and associate head in the Department of Computing at Hong Kong Polytechnic University , Hung Hom, Hong Kong . He is also the director of the Internet and Mobile Computing Lab in the department. Before joining Hong Kong Polytechnic University , he was on the faculty of computer science at James Cook University and University of Adelaid e in Australia , and City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Cao's research interests include computer networks, mobile and pervasive computing , parallel and distributed computing , fault tolerance , and middleware . His recent research has focused on how to develop protocols/algorithms and build middleware and applications, more specifically within the context of Wireless Networking, Pervasive Computing, and Peer-to-Peer Computing. Dr. Cao has directed and participated in many research/development projects funded by Hong Kong Research Grant Council, Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission, Hong Kong Polytechnic University , Huawei, Nokia, NSFC and Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. He has co-authored a book in mobile computing, co-edited 9 books, and published over 300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings (including top journals IEEE TSE, TC, TMC, TPDS,TWC, TKDE, TVT; IEEE Computer, IEEE Internet Computing, CACM, JPDC, PMC, and top conferences ICDCS, PERCOM, INFOCOM, ICNP, WWW, DSN, SRDS).
Dr. Cao is a senior member of China Computer Federation, a senior member of the IEEE , IEEE Computer Society , and the IEEE Communication Society , and a member of ACM . He is the Coordinator in Asia of the Technical Committee on Distributed Computing (TPDC) of IEEE Computer Society . He is also a member of the IEEE Technical Committees on Distributed Processing , Parallel Processing , IEEE Fault Tolerant Computing , and Self-Organization and Complex Distributed Systems.
Dr. Cao has served as an associate editor and a member of editorial boards of several international journal s, including IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal , Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing , Peer-to-Peer Networking and Applications , and Journal of Computer Science and Technology . He has also served as a chair and member of organizing / program committee s for many international conferences, including IEEE Percom, MASS, ICDCS, IPDPS, ICPP, RTSS, SRDS, PRDC, ICC, Globecom, WCNC, UIC, and EUC.
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are emerging as new a sensing and monitoring paradigm for structural health monitoring (SHM). Compared with traditional wired systems, monitoring of large civil infrastructure using wireless sensor networks is more economical, convenient, and scalable. It also offers new functionalities such as dynamic and real-time monitoring. Recent years have witnessed increasing research projects, even real-world deployments of WSN-based SHM systems. However, some limitations of WSNs, like low-bandwidth and unstable wireless communication, scarce resources on wireless sensor nodes remain to be addressed before WSN-based SHM systems become practical. In this presentation, I will identify the critical issues associated with WSN-based SHM systems and provide an overview of associated recent research on these issues. I will also talk about our on-goings work on WSN-based SHM systems, particularly in terms of system framework design, in-network processing and deployment.

报告人：王云 IBM 院士
Mr. Yun Wang is an IBM Fellow with IBM China Research, recently leading research in Internet of Things initiative and Next Generation Memory-based Information Systems in Cloud Computing, Complex Event Processing, Semantic Web, Business Analytics and Optimization.
Mr. Wang joined IBM DB2 development in 1985 and took the role as chief architect leading DB2 query architecture and technology with successful delivery of DB2 Data Warehouse and OLAP, DB2 Parallel Query Engine and initiated DB2 pure XML technology.
DB2 Spatial Extender was also delivered by Mr. Wang in developing DB2 Object Relational technology with ESRI's Geographic technology to deliver an industry standard Geographic Information System features inside DB2, which enabled relational database management systems to manage large scale physical-world geographic data efficiently and directly.
Recently, Mr. Wang extended his technical influence beyond database servers to Enterprise Content management, Collaboration, Service Oriented Architecture, Model Driven Architecture as well as a few Industry solutions.
Mr. Wang received more than forty USA patents on areas of database optimization, distributed heterogeneous databases, object relational database, and online analytic processing. Mr. Wang received a MS degree from University of California , Santa Barbara and a BS degree from National Taiwan University .
IOT is much more than just connecting billions of devices all over the world, it really opens the age for Information Technology to help people explore a comfortable and harmonic life with our physical world through deeper and wider understanding of the nature of the world surrounding us. This presentation will talk about the challenges that IOT will face due to its geo-distributed, heterogeneous characteristics as well as the scale and complexity nature of such a system of systems. A reference architecture and its applications with several industry scenarios will also be discussed, followed with a brief introduction of an eco-system, technology gap analysis and industry standard as well as education requirements.

陈东敏 博士现任美新半导体首席战略官（ Chief Strategy Officer ）。他专注于 MEMS 传感器和无线传感网技术和产品的开发及在中国物联网产业的应用及市场开拓。
陈东敏 博士是美国硅谷 Miradia Inc 公司创办者之一和董事 CTO 。 领导过该公司高密度集成电路 (CMOS) 与微机电（ MEMS ）光学微镜三维集成技术 , 及在高清投影显示数字微反射镜阵列，硅定时器，加速度计 , 陀螺仪等先进的传感器和执行器的应用开发。同时，他还负责公司的知识产权的战略发展。他在业界拥有超过 100 项专利，其中就包括半导体集成电路，微机电工艺，显示技术 , 传感技术等的核心技术的专利。
陈东敏 博士为凝聚态实验物理学家 , 曾在哈佛大学担任资深研究员十五年。专长于纳米材料，结构及器件的量子物理特性和应用 , 高密度 CMOS-MEMS 传感器集成的微系统工程学。在 NATURE, SCIECNE, PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 等国际著名科学杂志发表的文献有 60 多篇。
